Cancer is the second cause of death in the world. There have been efforts to overcome the problem in treatment of cancer using medicinal plants. As part of our on-going research investigation for potent and selective anticancer compound from natural products, we have been screening plant extracts for cytotoxic activities against cancer cell lines. In this study themethanolic extracts of twenty plants used by Iranian traditional healers and folk medicine for the treatment of cancer, wart, bacterial and fungal infection and other disease were testedin vitrofor their potential cytotoxic activity. Extracts were evaluated by MTT colorimetric assay using cancer cell line MCF7 and the effect of different concentration on survival were studied and IC50 (50% inhibitory concentration) was calculated. The extracts showed IC50 less than 50μg/ml selected for fractionation and further studies. Two plants showed the best cytotoxic effects and phytochemical studies and MTT test on other cell lines are being carried out.
