In this study ethnobotany, ethnopharmacology and antimicrobial activity of several extracts and fractions ofRubus froticosuswas investigated using the disc diffusion and broth micro dilution methods against 7 bacteria.Rubus froticosusL. is a medicine shrub distributed in Mazandaran province. The fruit, flower and leave decoction used by the rural people for treatment ulcers, vaginal lavages, aphta, diarrhea and intestinal disorders. The ethanol extract of leaves exhibited a good antibacterial activity against two Gram- positive bacteria (S. aureus, Entrococeus fecalis and five Gram-negative bacteria E. coli, Salmonella typhi, Shigella disentry, P. aeroginosa and Y. enthrocolitrica with the diameters of growth inhibition area in the range 10-25 mm. Neither the infusion and aqueous fractions nor showed any antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria. The results of this study support the use of this species in traditional medicine of Northern Iran as tonic and antiseptic to treat skin infections.
