Piper betel leaf extracts, Fusarium oxysporium and Phytophtora palmivora. antifungal activity.


Extracts of Piper betel leaves were used to evaluate its possible use as an antifungal agent to fight off plant diseases. P.betel leaves have been known for its use in traditional medicine but none has been demonstrated regarding its use as a plant anti-fungal agent. Preliminary bioassay conducted demonstrated that these extracts have an inhibitory effect upon the growth of the fungus in culture. Fungi cultured in the presence of sirih aceh and sirih hitam extracts exhibited slower and more inhibitory growth as opposed to the growth in its absence. Fusarium oxysporium and Phytophtora palmivora showed similar reaction pattern to both extracts. A clear demarcation exists at the forefront of the fungus as the colony approaches the region where the extract was present. Inoculation of asparagus with F. oxysporium and durian stems and leaves with P.palmivora simultaneously with the extracts failed to induce any infection. This is because the fungi had ceased to grow as indicated by the absence of new mycelium at the cut edges. Application of extracts three days post inoculation whereby the fungus had developed new mycelium and emerging onto the surface of the hosts managed to subsequently reduce the growth until most of the new mycelium have become shriveled. Thus these preliminary findings prove that these extracts possess anti-fungal qualities that holds some promise in its usage as an important agent to mitigate disease problems.
