Artemisia annua, high yielding strain, artemisinin

The leaves of qinghao (Artemisia annua L.) produced artemisinin, an antimalarial drug. Since the plants are propagated by seeds, artemisinin produced by each plant varies. The artemisinin content of plamlets produced in our laboratory ranged from 0.13 to 0.48%. These plants were derived from seeds obtained from Vietnam. This paper outlines an in vitro selection method for high artemisinin yielding strains of Artemisia annua.
