Labisia pumila var alata, ' Kacip Fatimah', Traditional Malay Herb , Kelantanese women

Background: Labisia pumila is commonly known in Malaysia as Kacip Fatimah among the local womenfolk. It is administered by almost all midwives and traditional healers in both urban and rural areas including natives in the jungle. Objectives To determine the knowledge, attitude and practice of Malay Kelantanese women in using Labisia pumila. Methods A cross sectional study involving a hundred respondents in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Results Out of 100 respondents, 43% were users, 45% ex-users and 12% distributors of Labisia pumila. Most of the respondents were married, middle education level, employed and had low income status. The respondents reported Labisia pumila incentively used to relieved body ache (70%), strengthen the womb (53%), tighten the vagina for sex satisfaction (51%) and during puerperium (41%). It is commonly used in capsule (54%) which mixes with other herbs (42%). About 64% respondents claimed it was cheap, more effective compared to allopathic medicine (66%) and satisfied (69%) with Labisia pumila effectiveness. However,45% discontinued using this herb because of difficulty to get it. Seventy two percent of respondents do not know the meaning of Kacip Fatimah even though almost all of them know the identification of the herb. Conclusion Despite widely used Labisia pumila among the respondents; their knowledge about Labisia pumila is still limited. Further study is suggested to look at the prevalence and factors associated with use of Labisia pumila among women of different age groups.
