The Cerry Tomato Leaves Faction Acts Positively Against MCF7 Breast Cancer Cell Lines

This study aims to further investigate the potential of tomato leaves fraction as an anti-breast cancer compound. Cherry tomato leaves were harvested and dried in an oven at 60oC for overnight. Dried leaves were grounded and potential anti-cancer compound was extracted with 82% methanol (v/v) at 100 rpm agitation speed for 24 hour. Then, extract was purified using column chromatography with different type of solvent. Sulforhodamine B (SRB) cytotoxicity test was applied before and after purification to observe to activity of the extract and franction  against MCF7 cell lines. Acetic acid:Ethyl acetate at ratio 5:5 showed the best separation with 3 fractions identified by TLC. The purification process was further carried out by column chromatography,where the same sovent combination and ratio were applied. Fractions collected from column were investigated by TLC again and only frantions 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 gave Rf value in the desired region.  Fraction number 12 gave the lowest percentage of viability, 5.06%, suggested that most cells were kiiled by the fraction.  The present results suggested that purified fraction of tomato leaves has potential to become a new alternative in breast cancer treatment.
