Extraction of Vitex Trifolia (Local Lemuni)

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Seminar (MAPS 2008)

21st October - 22nd October 2008

Place Held

The Legend Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

Vitex trifolia (family Lamiaceae) or locally named as lemuni was reported to possess antibacterial, anticancer and antimicrobial properties. The bluish water extract from the leaves is ommonly used as a food colourant. Flavone analogues, lignan derivatives, a norditerpene and triterpenoids were among the isolated compounds from Vitex speies. However, previous investigations were mostly focused on sample from India and Bangladesh. This is due to the herb's significant function in the practice of Ayurvedic. Therefore, a chemical study was performed in order to examine the composition of local lemuni. The dried leaves, including the flowers, were separated from the stems, weighing 220 and 120 g, respectively. Both parts were ground and added with non-aqueous solvents, consecutively. The weight and percentage of the extracts were calculated from the dry weight sample. It was found out that most significant yields were retrieved from the chloroform leaves extract (20g, 9%) and methanol stem extract (14g, 14%). The extracts from both parts were subjected to thin layer chromatography (TLC)(Silica gel Merck, hexane : choloroform = 50:50). It showed several spots (Rf = 0.3 to 0.8), indicating the presence of chemical substituents. Meanwhile, from the ultraviolet spectroscopy, the spectra showed that the maximum absorption of the extracts were found at ╬╗max = 342, 376 and 664nm. This corresponded to the presence of chromophores. The purification and biological studies of the extracts are in progress. In summary, all extracts require further examination, in order to fully identify the phytochemicals in this species
