Piper nigrum L. (black pepper) is a perennial woody climber that possesses medicinal value. The fresh leaves of P. nigrum were collected from the Taman Pertanian Universiti TPU), Universiti Putra Malaysia. Serdang; Selangor. The leaves were extracted with four different solvents, methanol, ethanol. hexane and distilled water, respectively. Polar solvents such as methanol, ethanol and boiling water exhibted higher yields compared to non-polar solvent such as hexane. Among the three polar solvents, methanol extract exhibited the highest yield (16.91 ±2.27%). Total phenolic and total flavonoid content determinations were carried out. In total phenolic content determination, methanol extract exhibited the highest total phenolic content (1.96 ± 0.05 mg GAE/g dry weight). The three polar solvents had similar total fiavonoid content with methanol extract exhibiting the highest value (1.51 t 0.01 mg QEJg dry weight). Antioxidant activity was determined by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test as well as lipid peroxidation inhibition using TBA test. In both DPPH and TBA assays, the methanol extract shoved the highest antioxidant activity of 74.22±4.50 and 55.48±5.05%, respectively. The lear extract of P. nigrum contained antioxidant compounds that allowed them to exhibit antioxidant activities. Piper nigrum extracts showed more antioxidant potential in free radical scavenging than inhibition of lipid peroxidation.
