Pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) is a technique which involves extraction with solvents at high pressure and temperature without their critical points being reached. Zingiber zerumbet L. is locally known as lempoyang and belongs to the family Zingiberaceae. It is commonly used as Ingredients in Malaysian traditional medicine, health supplements and tonics. The objective of this study was to optimize the extraction of oils from rhizomes of Zingiber zerumbet using PLE under various temperatures (50°C to 80°C) and pressures (1250, 1500, 1750 and 2000 psi). The solvent selected for this study was hexane. The chemical compounds present in extracts of Z. zerumbet were determined by using Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry. The yield of the extracts was analyzed and compared using statistical analysis tool. The optimum pressure and temperature for PLE of Z. zerumbet were 1750 psi and 70°C, respectively. These gave a maximum yield of 14.6%. Sixty chemical compounds were identified from the oils extracted from the rhizomes of Z. zerumbet. The major compounds obtained were zerumbone (60.30% area) at 1750 psi and 80°C. a-humulene (13.10% area) at 1250 psi and 80°C. and ocimene (2.53% area) at 1750 psi and 50°C. The results showed that PLE could be used for simultaneous extraction of zerumbone, α-humulene and ocimene from the rhizomes of Z. zerumbet.
