The antimicrobial effect of the methanol extract from leaves of Vitex trifolia L. was evaluated against a group of pathogenic bacteria using agar disc diffusion method based on the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standard (NCCLS) reference protocol. The Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria used in this study were Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Yersinia enterocolitica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Kiebsiella pneumoniae and Campylobacter jejuni. Disc potency of each sample-incorporated-disc was 1 mg/mi. Commercial antibiotics, namely, chloramphenicol (30 µg) and cefotaxime (30 µg) discs were used as positive controls. All tests were conducted in triplicates. Methanol Leaf extract of V. trifolia showed positive results against all seven bacteria with the greatest inhibition against V. enterocolitica and K. pneumonia.
