Replenishing qi to strengthen the spleen and nourishing the kidney to induce astringency. It is used to treat bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pulmonary emphysema and pulmonary heart diseases.

Pharmacology
The primary pharmacological actions of the formula are: preventing asthma, relieving cough, and promoting growth in animals. (1)
Preventing asthma: Oral administration of 2.5 or 5g/kg of the formula can prolong the incubation period of acetylcholine chloride-induced asthma in guinea pigs.
Relieving cough: Oral administration of 2.5 or 5g/kg of the formula can significantly reduce the number of ammonia water-induced coughs and asthma attacks in guinea pigs, an effect similar in magnitude to that of morphine.
Promoting growth in animals: Oral administration of 1.8 or 3.6g/kg of the formula can significantly promote growth in male mice.
Clinical Applications
The formula is used to treat cough, gasping and wheezing associated with bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pulmonary emhysema, and pulmonary heart diseases. One study followed up on 330 patients who took this formula and reported an effective rate of 92.7%. (2)
