Summary
This study highlighted the implications related to biopiracy when US patent office granted Basmati patent right to an American company RiceTec Inc, in late 1997. Basmati rice is a type of rice which grown in the Himalayan and Pakistan. It is long grain rice with notable fragrance and nut-like flavor. With Basmati patent right, RiceTec Inc can produce Basmati rice outside of India and it will definitely cause great loss for India’s and Pakistan’s global market.
