Abstract
Parameria laevigata (Al Juss.) Moldenke is widely used in Malay herbal preparations especially as a postnatal health care product. Commercial preparations of such product have to be authenticated and quality ascertained. The ‘marker’ system of crude drug authentication and quality assurance is currently being developed. This involves the isolation and identification of familiar compound(s) in a particular plant to be used as a marker. The chemical constituents of the bark are being investigated for that purpose. Sitosterol glycoside has been isolated and spectroscopically identified in addition to sitosterol and friedelin which were reported previously. A phenol carhoxylic acid has also been isolated, its purification and idenfication are in progress.
