Abstract

Research on the population of the henna plant in Penang has disclosed three different varieties namely: Lawsonia inermis var gabra, Lawsonia inermis var rubra, Lawsonia inermis var alba. Aside from the primary differences found in the color of the flowers (red, white and yellow), other marked differences were also observed, namely:- *leaf size, the largest was measured at 9 cm and the smallest at 2.5 cm. Larger are more effective when used in traditional medicines. the number of flowers found on flowering plants ranged from two to six flowers up to many more between two nodes. This is especially useful in the fragrance industry. *a few henna plants displayed the presence of thorns. The result from this study indicate that further research need to be carried out on henna plants, particularly on the morphological and phytochemicals aspects so as to obtain better results for applications in medicine and cosmetics (from the leaves), fragrance (from the flowers) as well as other traditional applications.
