Abstract

This patient, who had taken warfarin for 10 years after a mitral valve replacement, was advised by a herbalist to take Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis), a Chinese herbal remedy, for menopausal symptoms. She presented one month later with widespread bruising and an international normalised ratio (INR) of 10. Dong Quai contains coumarins and may also inhibit platelet aggregation. She was discharged well after six days.
