3.6.17.2 Analysis
Liquorice roots have medicinal uses. The raw materials are converted to extracts form for commercial applications. The amounts of export were low during the period between year 2000 to 2007 except in year 2006 when the quantity of the materials suddenly increased to 96,722.3 kg. The amount decreased appreciably in the following year. The demand for this product was not consistent, and in year 2006, the sudden rise in demand might have been due to higher manufacturing activities for pharmaceutical products. The revenues collected from the export trade did not follow the same pattern as that of the quantities exported, but, exhibited dual peaks in years 2002 and 2006 with values of RM152,000 and RM215,704 respectively. The cost per kg of product for the period had an irregular profile with the costs showing a dropp at the end of the period.
Comparison between the export and import unit cost indicated high negative values except in year 2002. Presumably, the local exporters were prepared to overlook the differences in price per kg of product as long as they were able to meet their commitment to their clients, and in the process benefited from the foreign exchange.
