6.1.1.4 Sub-region: Eastern Asia
The following countries are referred to as part of East Asia namely, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, North Korea, South Korea and Mongolia. Malaysia’s export quantity of herbal raw materials to the countries of this sub region was as shown in the Table 172 and Figure 224. Japan was the main importer of the raw material for about 38% of the total for this sub region, followed by Hong Kong (22.5%), China (18.2%), Taiwan (10.7%), Korea (0.4%) and Macau less than 1%. The exports to Japan were mainly other vegetable products not elsewhere specified, other spices, seaweeds and other algae, cinnamon and cinnamon tree flowers crushed or ground, ginger and seeds of cumin in that order. Exports to Hong Kong were mainly seaweeds and other algae, cardamoms and other spices. China on the other hand, imported other vegetable products not elsewhere specified, seaweeds and other algae, garlic, other essential oils other than those of citrus fruit, ginger, other natural gums, resins, gum-resins and oleoresins, cardamoms and other spices. The main imports of Taiwan were other alkaloids of cinchona and their derivatives and salts, garlic, seaweeds and other algae, other vegetable products not elsewhere specified other spices and gaharu wood chips.
