Entry Requirements
Minimum entry requirements for degree level study for students of Curriculum 2000 will be a 12-unit profile, which must be made up from one of the following configurations: Two A2 level subjects One A2 level subject plus one single award Advanced VCE One double award Advanced VCE Two single awards Advanced VCE Although Year -12 (after school / sixth form) qualifications will be a useful indicator of potential, offers of places will only be made against total achievement at the end of Year -13. Specific entry requirements for BSc (Hons) Herbal Medicine are 220 points including GCSE Mathematics and/or English at Grade C or above, plus GCSE Science. Other acceptable qualifications include: Scottish Certificate of Education Higher Grade passes, Irish Leaving Certificate Higher Grade passes International Baccalaureate BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Kite marked Access Course Applications from individuals with non standard qualifications, relevant work or life experience and who can demonstrate the ability to cope with and benefit from degree level studies are welcome. If you have not studied recently you may be required to undertake an Access program. *Requirements for international students are not specified.

This course is structured to provide a thorough academic grounding to the study of herbal medicine into which a comprehensive clinical training is integrated.

Level 1
- Communication and caring in practitioner/ client relationships
- Holism and healing (half module)
- Introduction to physiology and pharmacology theory, organ systems pathology (half module)
- Ancillary biochemistry (half module)
- Botany (half module)

Herbal medicine 1 and 2 to cover materia medica, herbal pharmacology, therapeutics, and supplementary experiential anatomy.
Clinical training will progress from initial observation to taking case histories, with strongly reflexive emphasis and under close supervision.
Level 2
- Theoretical physiology
- Organ systems pathology (half module)
- Metabolism and genetics (half module)
- Research methods
- Philosophy and health
- Herbal medicine 3 and 4 will concentrate mainly on medical science training in diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and clinical skills, plus further materia medica and therapeutics.
Students will be reinforcing their academic knowledge by gradually applying their skills in clinical training, with increasing reflexive emphasis and under close supervision.
Level 3
- In herbal medicine 5 and 6, emphasis is now particularly laid on building upon and adding to both the academic and practical knowledge gained to ensure students have sufficient knowledge of therapeutic skills to ensure safe and effective practice. This is supplemented by further modules:
- Counseling skills (half module)
- Nutrition (half module)
- Herbal pharmacy (half module)
- Practice management (half module)
- Dissertation
- Contemporary issues in complementary medicine.

On completion, graduates can pursue postgraduate level courses
Career Opportunities
On successful completion of the degree, graduates will be able to set up a professional practice as clinical medical herbalists. They are eligible to apply for membership of NIMH which has inclusive practitioner insurance, code of ethics, disciplinary and complaints procedures to guarantee protection for both patients and practitioners.
Alternative careers are also available to the graduates to choose from, which include professions as researchers or administrators in health care or plant medicines.
