Policy

In Italy, they use non-conventional medicine to describe traditional medicine and alternative medicine. There is currently no national policy or regulation on non-conventional medicine.

Laws & Regulations

Food supplements must be notified with the Ministry of Health when the company begins marketing.  The notification form, proof that the notification fee has been paid, and three product labels must be included.  No disease related claims may be made on nutritional products.

Herbs - There is a positive and negative list of allowable botanicals.  Most botanicals need not be registered provided they do not make strong claims.  Botanical supplements containing nutrients must be registered.

Currently there is no specific law for fortified and functional foods.  In lieu of law, all such products must be notified with the Ministry of Health when the company begins marketing.  The notification form, proof that the notification fee has been paid, and three product labels must be included.
