Studying The Protective Effect of Garlic on NSAID-induced Gastric Ulcers: Role of Nitric Oxide (NO)

Abstract

Garlic is known for its various medicinal effects for years. It has also been reported that garlic has a protective role against peptic ulcers with an unknown mechanism. This study investigates the effect and possible mechanism of garlic on NSAID-induced gastric ulcer. Fourty male wistar rats devided to 4 groups; control, Garlic treated “G”, Garlic and L-NAME treated “G+L”, Indomethacin “IND” group. G group received aqueous garlic extract and G+L received garlic and L-NAME for 10 days. During this period, IND group received normal saline. At the day 11, all animals received 50 mg/Kg IND orally and sacrificed 3 hrs later. Area and J-score of gastric ulcers were calculated. There was significant decrease in area and J-score of gastric ulcers in G group compared to IND (P<0.05). In G+L group, there was not significant difference between area and J-score of ulcers compare to IND group. It is concluded that garlic has a protective effect on NSAID-induced gastric ulcers possibly by elevation of NO.
