Abstract

The methanol extract of Sargassum ilicifolium was investigated for its anti-leukemic and anti amoebic activities against HL60 cells and Acanthamoeba polyphaga CCAP 1051/3A, respectively.  The concentrations of the crude extract used for cytotoxic assay ranged from 0.46 to 30 µg/ml while the concentrations used for anti-amoebic assay ranged from  0.001 to 10 µg/ml. The IC50 value of the extract on HL 60 cells viability was 8.5µg/ml.  The extract showed anti-amoebic effect with IC50 value of  0.8µg/ml. Observation using inverted microscope showed that all amoeba cells became cystic granular trophozoites, with a granular appearance.
