Abstract

Marine sponges of the genus Aaptos have been found to be a rich source of aaptamine alkaloids with interesting biological activities. This study reports the cytotoxic activity of the methanol extracts of Aaptos spp. collected from various locations on the islands off the Terengganu coast. The cytotoxic effect of the crude extracts against HL60 and MCF-7 cell lines were assessed by MTT assay. Five specimens (A-E) were found to be active against HL-60 cell lines. Whereas, only two specimens (E-D) were active against human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines.
