Abstract

This study reports the taxonomic identification and in-vitro screening for cytotoxic activity of 10 extracts ofHalichondriasp. collected from various locations at Bidong, Perhentian and Kapas Island, Terengganu. The methanol extracts of the specimens were subjected to thin layer chromatography to investigate the potential of this method in providing profiles that can be used as species-specific chemotaxonomic markers. The profiles of each specimen were compared to each other from the same and different localities and several specimens were in agreement with their morphological criteria suggesting that the profile can be used to distinguish them from other group of sponges. The preliminary identification was based on macro and microscopical evaluation of the morphological investigation including skeletal morphology, spicule and spicule arrangement as well as physical assemblages such as shape, size, colour and texture. The cytotoxic effect of the methanol extract ofHalichondriasp. against HL-60 and MCF-7 cell lines was assessed by MTT assay. The review on the chemical compounds from theHalichondriasupported the result of cytotoxicity screening of the extract.
