Abstract

A supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method followed by off-line gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been developed for the separation and identification of the components of the rhizomes of Alpinia  galanga. SFE was carried out with a home-made apparatus using supercritical carbon dioxide as the extraction medium at a temperature of 60 C and 30 minutes dynamic extraction on a 0.5g ground sample. This study has demonstrated the great benefits of SFE for its relatively fast and minimal solvent use over conventional extraction methods for the analysis  of plant materials.
