Abstract

Acupuncture is one of the most popular forms of complementary medicine used for many conditions including pain management, postoperative nausea and vomiting, etc. The aim of this overview presentation will be  to summarize current evidence of acupuncture research with systematic reviews. Numerous systematic review of acupuncture trials have been published. Based on current data, acupuncture has  documented evidence on it effectiveness for treating back pain, dental pain, fibromyalgia, for aiding gastrointestinal endoscopy, idiopathic headache, nausea and vomiting, as well as osteoarthritis of the knee. For the treatment of vast majority of conditions, the data are either inconclusive, e.g. chronic pain, cocaine dependence, depression, obesity and  analgesia during surgery. Because of numerous methodological and other problems, the current reports allow ample room for interpretations. Thus different experts will arrive with different conclusion.
