Abstract

The leaves of Pandanus sanderi (family: Pandanaceae) have bands of different colors, unlike the green Pandanus amaryllifolius (local name: pandan wangi). The leaves are characterized by longitudinal yellow and green stripes. In our methodology, distinctive stripes were separated, dried and ground, prior to the maceration with non-aqueous solvents. One gram of hexane extract from each part was subjected to a medium pressure liquid chromatography, producing a compound (two and three percents, respectively from the yellow and green parts of the leaves). A brown spot was observed when acidic cerric sulphate solution was sprayed on the thin layer chromatographic plate (Rf = 0.5; hexane:acetone = 99:1). Upon crystallization, white crystals were observed. Based on the nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic data, we discovered the carbon skeleton of our crystals were comparable to the tirucallane-type triterpene, a new antitubercular phytosterol, from Pandanus tectorius Soland. var. laevis. Our approach on analyzing Pandanus extracts still to continue involving other Malaysian species, despite the possible similarities of purified phytosterols from other samples. Finally, it is suggested that phytosterols are among the bioactive molecule from Pandanaceae.
