Abstract

Torbangun (Coleus amboinicus Lour.) is one of species belonging to the family Lamiaceae. The plant appears in countries in the tropical region such as Malaysia, India and Indonesia. In this region, the leaves of torbangun are used for wound healing and to treat sores, fever, asthma, abdominal colic and aphtha. In North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, lactation women of Bataknese traditionally consume the leaves as part of their diet during the first month of lactation in order to stimulate breast milk production. The present study aims to assess the efficacy of the leaves of Coleus amboinicus (CAL) in the management of Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS). An experimental clinical trial was conducted on 35 teenagers with PMS. Three intervention groups were defined: CAL leaves; commercial preparation and placebo. Participants were monitored individually for 2 months. The average age of participants was 17 years; menarche occurred around age 13 years. Participants had menstrual cycles of 28 or 29 days, with menstruation lasting 5 days. During each successive treatment cycle, participants experinced a lower pain intensity score. Multiple regression analysis, after adjusting each cycle for baseline pain, treatment compliance and other variables, showed that the group receiving CAL extract had significantly reduced pain intensity (p<0.001) compared with the commercial preparation and placebo groups.
