Abstract

Ocimum basilicum L. (OB) is a medicinal plant and a culinary herb that has been reported to possess potential health benefit. Many recent scientific studies have demonstrated its properties as platelet aggregation inhibitors and antimicrobial property. The aim of this study is to conduct an acute toxicity study of OB leaves aqueous extract (LAE) in Sprague Dawley rat. The study was carried out according to OECD guidelines 420. The study design consisted of one control and one treatment group; each consisted of five female rats. The treatment rats received LAE 5,000 mg/kg body weight (BW) orally in a single dose while the control rats received water only. Neither death nor any toxic sign was observed during the study. Parameters measured during the study were clinical observation, body weight changes, food and water intake. At the end of the experiment, blood was withdrawn from- all rats before they were sacrificed. Blood samples were used for hematology and clinical biochemical studies. We found that the total protein, albumin, alanine aspartate transminase (AST), urea and uric acid in the treated rats to be significantly different compared to the control rats. There was no significant difference in other parameters.
