Cytotoxic Effects of Juniperus depressa and Juniperus excelsa on Human Tumor Cells

It has been reported that several juniperus posse cytotoxic activities on some human tumor cell lines. In this study we sought to determine whether IranianJuniperus depressaandJuniperus excelsahave any cytotoxic effects. Male and female branchlets and fruit ofJ. depressaandJ. excelsawere collected from Golestan (Golestan province) and Arasbaran (Azarbayejan province) forests, respectively. They were identified and voucher specimens of them were kept. Using ethanol 80%, hydroalcoholic extracts ofJ. depressaandJ. excelsawere prepared by perculation method. Then cytotoxic effects of them on Hela, KB and MDA-MB-468 cell lines were determined using MTT assay. Cytotoxic effect was considered when more than 50% reduction in cell survival was observed. Extracts from male and female branchlets ofJ. depressaand its fruit in a dose dependent manner showed inhibitory activities against Hela, KB and MDA-MB-468 cell lines. Although, extracts from male and female branchlets ofJ. excelsaand its fruit significantly decreased the viability of Hela, KB and MDA-MB-468 cell lines, only its fruit extracts showed considerable cytotoxic activity on KB cells. It is concluded from this experiment that J. depressahas good cytotoxic activity and needs to be studied further.
