Ginger harvesting is a laborious, tedious arid time consuming process which requires mechanization if the crop is to be cultivated in large areas. Ginger harvesting machine is presently not available. The objective of the study is to examine the performance of currently available machines that are used for harvesting similar underground crops in temperate countries. The machines studied comprised a potato digger-elevator and two models of potato digger-elevator-cleaner-collector (single row and double row types). Based on the study, a design concept is prepared for a ginger harvester, to be used under the Malaysian farming conditions. The proposed harvester will be of a twin-row design to be used with a medium sized four-wheeled tractor (60-70 h.p) with a targeted machine workrate of 0.2ha/hour.
