7.1 INTRODUCTION
The following persons represent a broad cross-section of the growing force of practitioners, teachers, scientists and devoted practitioners from around the globe who have an interest in seeing the full potential of Chiropractic to assist people who are in pain or who have been limited in their activities, given the opportunity to regain their health without the use of drugs or surgery.
The first two profiles listed hereunder, however, are of two ‘giants’ of the written word who were not Doctors of Chiropractic, but who came to know the profession in special ways and witnessed, during their lifetimes, a swelling of interest in this growing healing art and science because of their personal devotion to meaningful research.
Such pioneers should not be forgotten, as there is little doubt that research into chiropractic would not have reached the high point of interest it enjoys today without the contribution of academically minded men and women like Dr Joseph Keating and Dr Walter Wardwell.

1. JOSEPH C. KEATING, Jr. PhD(1950-2007)
Joseph C. Keating, Jr. (1950–2007) was renowned for his work on chiropractic history. Originally trained in psychology, he devoted most of his life to teaching at chiropractic colleges and performing research. He was instrumental in helping to develop and improve chiropractic research through mentoring many chiropractors.

2. WALTER I. WARDWELL, PhD (1917-2005)
Walter I. Wardwell was born in Massachusetts, USA, on 23 August 1918. A sociologist, he had a lifelong interest in chiropractic. His PhD, completed in 1951 at Harvard University examined social issues for chiropractors working in Massachusetts.
